The Resin Bound Driveway Installation Process: Step by Step

Curious about how a resin driveway is actually installed? Here's a clear, step-by-step breakdown of exactly what happens from groundworks to final sweep.

If you're thinking about a resin bound driveway, understanding the installation process helps you know what to expect — and what quality looks like at each stage. Here's how we approach every installation.

Stage 1: Site Survey and Specification

Before any work begins, we conduct a free site survey. We:
  • Measure the area accurately
  • Assess the existing base (can it be overlaid, or does it need excavation?)
  • Discuss drainage requirements
  • Review aggregate and edging options
  • Produce a fully itemised written quote

No survey = no quote. We never price without seeing the site first.

Stage 2: Groundworks (Where Required)

    If excavation is needed:
  • Excavation: Remove the existing surface to the required depth (typically 150–200mm total)
  • Sub-base: Supply and lay MOT Type 1 aggregate to the correct depth
  • Compaction: Machine-compact the sub-base in layers
  • Edging: Set out and bed the border edging (granite setts, block kerbs, or aluminium restraints)
  • Drainage: Install any required drainage channels or soakaways

This is typically a 1-day process for a standard driveway.

Stage 3: Surface Preparation

    Before resin is applied:
  • Clean: The base is swept and blown clear of all dust and debris
  • Dry: We confirm the surface is moisture-free (critical for adhesion)
  • Prime: The correct primer for the substrate is applied and allowed to cure

Skipping or rushing this stage is the most common cause of installation failures.

Stage 4: Resin Mixing and Application

This is the technically skilled phase:
  • Mixing: The two-part resin (Part A and Part B) is combined in the correct ratio, then the aggregate is added and mixed until every stone is fully coated
  • Application: The mix is poured onto the surface and trowel-spread to a consistent, even depth — typically 15–18mm
  • Finishing: The surface is smoothed, edges are detailed, and the area is allowed to begin curing

The mix has a limited working time (approximately 20–30 minutes), so our team works methodically and efficiently to ensure consistent coverage.

Stage 5: Curing and Final Inspection

  • Initial cure: 4–6 hours for foot traffic
  • Vehicle traffic: 24 hours
  • Final inspection: We walk the entire installation with you, check edges and finish, and confirm you're completely satisfied
  • What We Leave Behind

A clean site, a fully swept surface, and a driveway you can start enjoying immediately (on foot) and fully within 24 hours. We remove all waste and leave your property as clean as we found it.
