Resin Bound vs Block Paving: Which Is Better for Your Driveway?

Two of the most popular driveway surfaces in Yorkshire go head to head. We compare resin bound and block paving on looks, cost, maintenance, and longevity.

Resin bound and block paving are the two most popular premium driveway surfaces in the UK. Both look great when newly installed, but they have very different characteristics over time. Here's our honest, side-by-side comparison.

Appearance

Resin Bound: A seamless, smooth surface with a natural stone appearance. Available in dozens of aggregate colours and blends. No visible joints, lines, or gaps.

Block Paving: A structured, pattern-based surface with visible joints between individual blocks. Available in a wide range of colours, sizes, and laying patterns (herringbone, stretcher bond, etc.).

*Winner: Depends on your style preference — resin for a modern, seamless look; block paving for a more traditional, structured aesthetic.*

Maintenance

Resin Bound: Almost zero maintenance. The seamless surface leaves nowhere for weeds to take hold, and the UV-stable resin won't fade. An occasional rinse or pressure wash is all that's needed.

Block Paving: Requires regular weeding of joints, periodic re-sanding of the joint compound, and occasional re-levelling of sunken blocks. Algae and moss growth in joints is a common issue.

*Winner: Resin bound — significantly less ongoing maintenance.*

Permeability and Drainage

Resin Bound: Fully permeable — water drains through the surface and into the sub-base below. SUDS compliant; no planning permission needed for residential driveways.

Block Paving: Can be permeable (if laid on a permeable sub-base with open-jointed blocks) but most traditional block paving installations are not fully permeable.

*Winner: Resin bound.*

Durability

Resin Bound: A well-installed resin driveway lasts 15–25 years. The main vulnerability is UV degradation if a non-UV-stable resin is used — something we never compromise on.

Block Paving: Individual blocks are extremely durable, but the installation as a whole can suffer from sunken blocks, cracked blocks, and joint erosion over time. Repairs are straightforward but time-consuming.

*Winner: Similar lifespan — resin bound wins on consistent performance.*

Cost

Both surfaces sit in a similar price bracket for a complete installation. Resin tends to be slightly more cost-effective per m² for larger areas; block paving can be cheaper for smaller drives.

Our Recommendation

For most Yorkshire homeowners who want a premium, low-maintenance driveway that will look as good in 15 years as it does on day one, resin bound is our recommendation. But block paving edging combined with a resin field is a combination we install regularly — giving you the structure of block work with the seamless appeal of resin.
