If you've been researching driveways, you've probably come across the term 'SUDS compliant' in relation to resin bound surfacing. But what does it actually mean — and why does it matter?
What is SUDS?
SUDS stands for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems. In simple terms, it refers to drainage approaches that manage surface water in a way that mimics natural drainage, rather than channelling rainwater into already-stressed public drainage systems.
Why Does It Matter for Driveways?
In 2008, the UK government changed permitted development rights for front garden paving. If you want to install an impermeable surface (one that doesn't allow rainwater to drain through) over more than 5m² in a front garden, you generally need planning permission.
But there's an important exception: permeable surfaces don't require planning permission.
Because resin bound driveways are fully permeable — water passes through the surface, through the aggregate sub-base, and into the ground below — they are SUDS compliant and fall within permitted development rights.
Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded: An Important Distinction
It's worth flagging the difference between resin bound and resin bonded (sometimes called resin scatter) surfaces:
At Yorkshire Resin Drives, we install resin bound surfaces only — the industry-leading, fully permeable specification.
Do I Need Planning Permission?
For most standard residential front driveways, if you're choosing a resin bound surface: no, you don't need planning permission.
However, there are exceptions — including conservation areas, listed buildings, and certain types of development. We always recommend checking with your local planning authority if you have any concerns. We're happy to help guide you through the process.
Additional Benefits of SUDS Compliance
Beyond the planning permission advantage, SUDS-compliant surfaces:
