The resin bound driveway industry has expanded rapidly over the past decade — and with that growth has come a significant increase in poor installations. Here are the most common problems we see, what causes them, and how to ensure your installation doesn't suffer from the same issues.
1. Reflective Cracking
What it looks like: Cracks in the resin surface that follow the lines of the base beneath — particularly the joints in block paving or cracks in a damaged concrete base.
What causes it: Installing resin over a non-solid or jointed base. As the base moves or cracks flex with temperature, the resin surface cracks in the same places.
How to avoid it: Ensure your installer properly assesses the base before overlaying. Cracked concrete or block paving needs to be repaired or replaced before resin is applied.
2. Surface Delamination
What it looks like: The resin layer separating from the base beneath — lifting at the edges or forming bubbles.
What causes it: Inadequate surface preparation (dust, oil, or moisture on the base before resin is applied) or using the wrong primer for the substrate.
How to avoid it: Insist on proper surface preparation — cleaning, drying, and priming — before the resin is applied. Ask your installer about their preparation process.
3. Aggregate Bleed-Out or 'Bald' Patches
What it looks like: Areas where the resin has not fully encapsulated the aggregate, leaving loose stone or patchy, rough areas.
What causes it: Incorrect resin-to-aggregate ratio (too little resin), poor mixing, or applying the mix too thick.
How to avoid it: Use an experienced installer with a track record of quality work. Ask to see completed installations and references.
4. Yellowing or UV Degradation
What it looks like: The resin binder yellowing over time, particularly in areas of direct sunlight, changing the overall colour of the surface.
What causes it: Using a non-UV-stable resin. Cheaper resins contain aromatic polyurethane, which reacts to UV light and yellows significantly.
How to avoid it: Ask specifically whether your installer uses UV-stable (aliphatic) polyurethane resin. All Yorkshire Resin Drives installations use UV-stable resin only.
5. Weed Growth
What it looks like: Weeds growing through or on the surface of the resin.
What causes it: Resin bound surfaces don't host weed growth through the surface — this is one of their key benefits. However, if organic debris (leaves, soil) is allowed to accumulate on the surface, weeds can establish in that debris on top of the resin.
How to avoid it: Keep the surface clean of organic debris, especially in autumn. A regular sweep or rinse is all that's needed.
